Hosting

Your site needs somewhere to live and someone to keep it running. That’s what the subscription pays for. It costs $35 a month plus HST, or $385 a year, which is twelve months for the price of eleven. The minimum term is twelve months, then it runs month to month until either of us ends it with 30 days’ written notice.

What’s included

  • Hosting and the HTTPS certificate
  • WordPress, theme and plugin updates, with security updates applied within 30 days of release and sooner for a severe one
  • Daily encrypted backups, kept off your site’s server, in Toronto: a daily copy for 30 days, a weekly copy for 12 weeks and a monthly copy for 12 months
  • Uptime monitoring: we’re alerted when your site is down, and we act on it during business hours and on a best-effort basis outside them
  • Free fixes when something on your site stops working because of the platform, an update or our own work
  • Storage on a Standard site of 2 GB of files and a 250 MB database, many times what a small business’s site uses

What’s not included

You can change your own pages, hours, prices and photos from your Editor account at no charge. Anything you’d rather we did, including help using the site, is $110 an hour, quoted and agreed before we start.

Your domain, email accounts, search-engine or advertising services and writing copy beyond tidying what you supply are also not included.

No uptime guarantee

We don’t offer an uptime guarantee or service credits. We’re a small, local provider, and what we promise is attention, not a percentage.

Where your data is kept

Your site and its backups are stored in Canada: the servers are with OVHcloud in Beauharnois, Quebec, and the backups are with Backblaze in Toronto.

Visitor traffic passes through Cloudflare, which protects the site and may process that traffic outside Canada. Your site’s account emails, and contact form enquiries if you add a form, are sent through Amazon SES in Montreal. Amazon is a US company, so its delivery logs are stored in Canada but within reach of US law.

If you leave

Your domain is registered in your name, and your content is yours. Ask at any time and you’ll get a full export of your files, database and content, in a form another provider can take over. There’s no fee, no notice period for the export and no argument.

If you end the subscription during the first twelve months, you pay the remaining months of the term. If your site is on a binarypact.com address, that address stays with us, but your site and its data go with you.
